The Dark Matter, matters (2023) 11-piece series draws inspiration from the complex and often unseen world just 4 millimeters beneath our feet, where life thrives in the form of lichens, algae, mosses, fungi, and cyanobacteria. These organisms, collectively known as biological soil crusts, play a vital role in maintaining ecosystems by stabilizing soil, preventing erosion, supporting nutrient cycling, and fostering plant growth in harsh environments.

Through my ceramic works, I aim to translate the intricate textures and delicate forms of these living crusts into art, capturing their patterns, undulations, colours and beauty. Using clay, porcelain, stained porcelain slips and glazes, I recreate the rich surface patterns, blending surprising and earthy tones alongside organic structures that reflect their vital presence in nature. Each piece celebrates the synergy between these organisms and their environment, offering a glimpse into the small but essential world that sustains life from the ground up.

This collection of undulating spheres emerges as a tactile meditation on cushion moss communities. Each sphere is covered in round impressions, creating depth, shadow, and a dance of light across the surface, mimicking the way light filters through the forest floor. The forms, softly textured and rhythmic, mirror the delicate balance and interconnectedness found in nature.

Hundreds of lime green slip dots punctuate the surface, evoking a sense of movement—an almost organic pulse—that echoes the intricate growth patterns of mosses. The subtle lichen glaze, reminiscent of those same mosses nestled within the alpine biome, conveys both fragility and endurance, a testament to the resilience of life in harsh environments.

In this work, the spheres invite contemplation of scale and detail, of smallness as a form of strength. Just as cushion moss weaves tightly together to withstand alpine winds, these forms reflect the unassuming yet vital life that quietly flourishes in the forest’s hidden corners.

3. Symbiosis on Pine, 2024

Huon pine, fabric, thread, beads, glue.

3.1) 1200 x 43 x 6cm - $1195.00

3.2) 30.3 x 45.1 x 7cm - $585.00

3.3) 13.5 x 30.1 x 7cm - $345.00

Crafted with a Huon pine timber slab, this artwork acknowledges the ancient trees that define the Tasmanian landscape. Hand-embroidered lichens, mosses, and mycelial networks are meticulously sewn and glued onto the vertical plane, mimicking the natural places these organisms can be found as they interact with old and decomposing trees.

Lichens, fungi, and mosses play a crucial role in the cycling of nutrients, breaking down detritus in the forest and enriching the soil. Their processes not only contribute to the health of the ecosystem but also foster new growth, creating a continuous cycle of life.

As I walked through the rainforest, these organisms captured my eye with their unique forms and textures. This work highlights their significance in maintaining ecological balance and their scope, reaching great heights and felling giants, while drawing attention to the frilly and delicate beauty of lichens.

Forest Fragments Miniatures (2024) celebrates the intricate life within Tasmania's forests, with each tile—no larger than a postage stamp—capturing a tiny yet vibrant piece of Cradle Mountain’s ecosystem. These delicate ceramics honor the lush lichens, fungi, and mosses that form a healthy biome. Created to emphasize the importance of leaving nature undisturbed, this series reflects on both the fragility and resilience of diminishing forests worldwide. Through these fragments, viewers are invited to treasure and protect the richness of forest ecosystems for future generations.

This contemporary textile artwork emerges as an abstracted celebration of Tasmania’s rainforest ecology, where botanical forms, lichens, fungi, and mosses intertwine. Beginning with layers of machine embroidery, I lay down foundational colors that evoke the forest’s rich hues. Hand-stitching follows, using diverse embroidery and stump-work stitches to sculpt organic forms, bringing depth to the landscape of each organism. Glass beads delicately accentuate the piece, evoking slime molds, fungal fruiting bodies, and moss spores. The textures invite viewers to discover the layered and interconnected beauty inherent in these fragile ecosystems.

Ecologie II (2024) brings the vibrant textures of rainforest growth to life through contemporary textiles. Using dyed silk ribbons to echo the patterns found on trees along the Enchanted Walk, the work layers thousands of French knots to represent lichen, moss, and fungi clusters. These intricate stitching techniques reflect the densely interwoven communities that flourish in the forest, with each knot and ribbon portraying the resilience and beauty of organisms that make up this ecosystem’s essential, unseen life forms.

13. Bryophyte I, 2024

Did you know that mushrooms have 26,000 different sexes? Imagine the diversity! Look around you in nature and see their infinitesimal diversity. The planet’s ecosystems are reliant on this biodiversity for health and vitality. The lineage of fungi, animals and plants is long and can be scientifically traced showing innovations that enhance nature to thrive, even in the face of adversity.

Hybridity is a mechanism embraced in nature. We humans are all a mix of DNA lineages; traits and characteristics passed down through our relatives. The idea of existing as a living being in this time and place with all our glorious bits n pieces of character, thought, feelings and sexuality carries a humility and a hope.

People everywhere desire to be known, accepted and valued. To be seen. To be seen for who we are, to be seen in the bodies we are in, for our positives and our perfect imperfections. What is more powerful to the human heart and psyche than to experience another’s direct gaze to hear and feel the words, “I see you”.

Can we extend this kindness to our fungi relatives?

Rapid adaptation in response to the humanized environment compels speciating organisms to respond in new ways. Strange and unfamiliar, these ‘Hybrid Wallflowers’ reveal abstract elements from the realms of fungi, animals and plants. Made with a mycelial imagination, Hybrid Wallflowers play the role of decomposers, feeding on manufactured materials. The hope? To remain extant, bringing restoration to human encroached landscapes and a renewed vitality to the earth’s biodiversity.

2024 Bay of Fires Art Prize – Finalist

Within the parlour dome, a biological soil crust emerges as a vibrant ecosystem, showcasing the interplay of life in the form of two whimsical candy-pink soil animals. This delicate crust, often overlooked, plays a crucial role in soil health and ecosystem stability. It functions as a protective layer, fostering nutrient cycling and supporting diverse microbial life. The concept of eco-acoustics emphasizes the healing power of sound in promoting healthy ecosystems, suggesting that playing music for the soil crust can nurture and sustain its vital functions, bridging art and nature in a symbiotic relationship.
